Specifications
Okay, let’s get into the specifics of this tent. One of the standout features of the Skandika Turin 12-Person Tent is its size – we’re talking three generously-sized sleeping cabins – each bedroom area is 240 x 210 cm. So pretty big, and separated by a mosquito mesh to keep the bugs out. This tent is tailor-made for large families or groups of friends looking to share their camping experience. You’ll be able to comfortably accommodate 2 or 3 people in each cabin – so maybe not 12 people in total if you want complete comfort, but still a large group.
Each sleeping cabin offers ample space for multiple sleeping bags or air mattresses, ensuring everyone gets a good night’s sleep without feeling squeezed. The clever design provides privacy for each cabin, allowing everyone to enjoy some personal space while still being part of the group. You get the best of both worlds.
Then there’s the living area in the middle of the tent. This area serves as the heart of the campsite, where you can gather, dine, and relax. The headroom is impressive, at 6 foot 5 inches, which allows even the tallest campers to move around comfortably. No cricks in your neck at the end of the holiday! You don’t often get this type of height with tunnel tents, so this is genuinely impressive.
It’s a versatile space that adapts to your needs. Whether you’re seeking shelter from the elements or simply want to enjoy the great outdoors without the bugs, this tent’s ‘living room’ has you covered. It’s perfect for rainy days, family games, or busting out a board game to get everyone arguing. You can even invite other campers around to yours for a drink!
One of the most critical factors when choosing a family-sized tent is how easy it is to set up. Nobody wants to spend hours wrestling with tent poles and guy ropes when they could be enjoying the campsite. The Skandika Turin doesn’t disappoint in this department. With clear and concise instructions and colour-coded poles, setting up this tent is a breeze, even for those with limited camping experience. It’s designed to be set up easily by two people.
In terms of weather proofing – it comes with an ‘extra resilient water column’, with an innovative PU-coated polyester.
Finally, it comes with a handy repair kit, which we hope you never need to use!
Using The Skandika Turin
Our camping trip with the Skandika Turin was a bit of an experiment. We went away with another family (four adults and four in total), who didn’t own a tent – the perfect opportunity to give this a test drive.
The two dads of the group (me and my mate) were in charge of setting it up. To be honest, I was dreading it. I’m only usually comfortable falling out with my wife when it comes to jobs like this…! But I have to say, we were fully set up and opening a congratulatory can of beer within about 25 minutes. The colour-coded poles really helped us out. One of the easier tents of this size that I’ve ever had to pitch. A great way to start our first night there.
The standout feature of the Skandika Turin, and one that made a substantial practical difference, was its three sleeping cabins. With a group this size, we would have felt cramped in a smaller tent but with the Turin, each cabin felt like a private room, complete with enough space for sleeping bags, air mattresses, and personal belongings. I liked how flexible the space was.
It almost felt like we were in separate hotel rooms – first ones up in the morning would go out and put the kettle on, and we’d all slowly make our way out as we woke up to join them for breakfast and a hot drink. It was a great way to start the day.
The kids had their own rooms, and we adults had ours, making bedtime routines smoother and enhancing our overall camping experience. No stepping on each other’s toes or tripping over sleeping bags in the middle of the night!
The living space in the Skandika Turin was perfect for the gap between dinner and the kid’s bedtime. It’s where we would gather for meals, play games when it started to get colder. Plus when it started chucking it down on the second afternoon, it was nice to have a big space that we could all congregate in.
The inner tent material proved to be breathable – which was great as even though it was raining, it was still quite hot. With so many people in one tent, that could have become unpleasant, but it really didn’t. The air vents, windows and blinds all helped on this front as well. We had a fair amount of light when we needed it, without it being too bright when we were trying to get the kids to bed.
The ground sheet coped with everything well – as it’s sown into the tent, there was no risk of any leaks, and so it proved – even in the very heavy rain and strong winds that we experienced on that second day. We used another groundsheet for extra insulation, as we always tend to do if we are expecting bad weather.
We all got good nights sleep throughout our stay, which is the main thing you want from a tent.
Verdict
The Skandika Turin Large Family Tent lived up to its promise of providing a spacious and comfortable camping experience for families and large groups. With its roomy sleeping cabins, versatile living space, and user-friendly setup, it’s an excellent choice for those seeking a memorable outdoor adventure. Just be prepared for its size and invest in one if camping is a regular family activity. Skandika’s reputation for quality shines through in this tent, making it a reliable companion for your next camping excursion.
