About The Brand

If you haven’t heard of Coleman – where have you been! (Certainly not on this site – we make no secret of the fact that we are huge fans of Coleman with many favourable reviews)

They have a very impressive reputation in the Outdoors and Camping Industry, and it’s a reputation that they have earned through over a century of producing quality products. Coleman is a brand you can trust – we have had overwhelmingly more positive experiences with their products than negative ones.

Specifications

Not very long ago, before I started going on regular camping trips, I didn’t think there could possibly be many ‘specifications’ when it came to an airbed. I think in my head, they were the same as when I was a kid, which you only ever used when you had loads of guests for a night and it doubled up as a lilo when you went on holiday! Back then the only questions you seemed to ask of it was: does it inflate easily, and, does it stay inflated?

Suffice to say, things have come a long way since then. And if you have ever been camping using a poor quality air mattress, you’ll know what a difference a good one can make!

This Coleman Comfort Airbed has plenty of features. First of all, let’s talk about the size – it comes in either single or double. I have the double, which has dimensions of 188 x 137 x 22 cm – the size of a standard double bed. This may seem obvious, but some air mattresses can be a little bit smaller than a double bed, and you really notice the difference those extra centimetres can make!

The first really interesting feature here is the fact that it is a dual chamber air mattress, which means that there are two different compartments which you fill with air, one on each side of the mattress. What’s the benefit of this? Well, the theory is that it means one side is not impacted by movement on the other side. You know when you share a ‘normal’ air mattress, and every time the other person rolls over it feels like you’re aboard a ship on choppy water? That shouldn’t happen here.

Next we have the double lock, leak free, airtight system, which it claims is ‘guaranteed not to leak’. There is nothing worse than waking up, usually at around four in the morning, to find that your air mattress has lost most of it’s air, and you’re basically sleeping on the floor. This system is supposed to prevent that. The double lock is also designed to help with the inflation process – meaning the air doesn’t leak out when you have finished pumping it up – there is an extra seal in place in the air valve.

Now let’s get to your comfort – you’d hope it would be a key objective with the Coleman Comfort Air Mattress! Here they employ a coil beam construction, when helps to support your weight while you sleep. It’s also there to help keep the mattress stable.

This air mattress is made out of an ‘advanced’ PVC. Personally, I would have liked to know a little more about exactly how it is ‘advanced’, but they just give us the key benefit, rather than the science behind it, and that benefit is that it is made of stranger materials which increases its durability and makes it less likely to suffer a puncture. It’s also supposed to help keep repel the cold if you are camping on cold ground.

There is no built in air pump, which is a feature that some of the competition have. While this can be a helpful feature, the problem is always that if they go wrong, they’re more trouble than they are worth. For an air mattress at this sort of price range, I’m happy that it doesn’t have an integrated air pump. Finally, a couple of little extras that you get in the box – a puncture repair kit and a carry bag. The carrying bag, in particular, comes in handy – particularly when you have a lot of other stuff to fit in bags (which my family invariably do!)

Using the Product

I recently went on a week-long camping holiday with my wife and two kids to try out the Coleman Comfort Air Mattress. (Okay, it wasn’t specifically to test out the air mattress, it was a holiday, but I did test out the air mattress while we were there).

To inflate the airbed, we used a hand-held electric pump (I would wholeheartedly recommend getting one of these and having it as part of your camping kit). It was all set up in no time, to the delight of my boys, who proceeded to jump, flip and somersault on it, which was a helpful examination of its durability. It passed.

But the real exam was to come – how did we sleep? I have always struggled with sleeping on an airbed – I often find that my back aches a lot the next morning.

But with the Coleman Comfort, I slept like a baby. Genuinely, I have never got so much rest on a camping holiday before. I slept through every night, only waking up when one of my children decided to come and jump on me in the morning. My wife agreed – my relentless rolling and moving in the night had not bothered her at all – she also got all the rest she needed.

The support that it gives your back is great. It’s a firm mattress (when pumped up to the max, like we had it), and that works to minimise the ‘wobble’ that you get from other air mattresses. One morning my wife woke up before me, and managed to climb over me to get out of the tent without waking me – which just wouldn’t be possible with a lot of other mattresses.

All in all, this blow up bed made our break much more relaxing, and our tent feel more like home. While nothing is like sleeping in your own bed, this was the closest I’ve come across while in the outdoors.

Verdict

It will come as no surprise that this airbed comes highly recommended by me. It was easy to inflate, it survived an onslaught from my boys, but most of all, it provided us with a week’s worth of good sleeping – and for that, it more than justifies the cost.

One major piece of advice – don’t skimp on an air mattress when you camp. Spending a little bit more on a decent one will have such a massive impact on your trip – nothing is as good after a bad night sleeping. While there are plenty of more expensive options, the Coleman Comfort is a great mattress which will ensure no matter how long your trip is, you won’t come back needing a holiday!

Put the Coleman Comfort Airbed on your shortlist.
