Cooking is genuinely one of the best parts of any camping trip. It is that golden time of day where everyone finally slows down, grabs a drink, and gathers round the pitch – even if the British weather is doing its usual thing in the great outdoors.
The problem, however, is the prep. Chopping fresh veggies on a tiny plastic board, with failing evening light and a table that wobbles every time someone walks past, is where easy camping meals suddenly turn into an absolute faff. Preparing camping meals shouldn’t feel like a chore.
This is exactly why we decided to try the 12-in-1 Vegetable Chopper as a camp cooking hack for my next camping trip. Well, for full transparency, we had it in the kitchen and one day I thought “this might be quite good when we go camping”, so I tried it out. I mean, on paper, a veg chopper is absolutely not standard camping gear. But the theory is all there; it should make setting up your outdoor kitchen quicker, cleaner, and a lot more flexible – right? I thought I was onto something…
Quick Verdict
- Best for: Car camping, family camping, road trips, and campervan holidays.
- Not for: Ultralight backpacking, tiny rucksacks, or wild camps with no water.
- Big win: Prep speed, vastly less mess, and unlocks loads of new recipes.
- Main drawback: It is a bit bulky, the blades are incredibly sharp, and it needs careful cleaning.
My take: If you want better meals without turning cooking into a massive project, this is a solid add-on for your next trip.
What Problem This Solves at Camp
Let’s be honest, campfire cooking gets significantly harder when you have limited prep space. If the wind picks up, half your diced ingredients end up blowing into the grass. If you want a fresh, healthy camping meal, you spend 20 minutes meticulously chopping red onions and peppers while your family asks when dinner will be ready. And nobody wants that lingering onion smell on their hands for two days when hot water is a ten-minute walk away.
This gadget solves all of that because it chops straight into an enclosed container. You get perfectly diced veg in seconds for your one pot dinners, the juices stay trapped in the tub, and the wind doesn’t steal your dinner. It makes easy camping a reality.

The “Camp Test”
Packability and Speed:
When it comes to packing, all the loose blades stash neatly inside the main catch container, so it slots easily into a cool box gap. It’s definitely aimed at families who have the boot space for a few luxury items on their outdoor adventure.
But the speed is where this thing earns its keep. You can dice an entire onion in about ten seconds with one firm push of the lid. Chopping tomatoes and slicing peppers takes barely any effort at all. It completely removes the prep barrier, turning what used to be a tedious chore into a few seconds of satisfying clicking.
Mess Control and Cleaning:
Because everything drops into the tub, your camping table stays beautifully clean. The only thing that gets messy is the chopper itself.
This brings us to cleaning, which is the one thing you need to stay on top of. The best system is to rinse it in warm, soapy water immediately after you use it. Do not let it sit on the table while you eat. Dried food on a steel grid is a nightmare to scrub in a field.
Safety:
I need to be direct here: the stainless steel grid blades are aggressively sharp and demand respect. When you are swapping parts, always set the blades face-down inside the container. Keep it strictly out of reach of kids, and wash it carefully with a brush.
What Meals It Unlocks
With fast prep, you finally stop defaulting to beige camping food. When chopping isn’t a chore, you can suddenly throw together sizzling fajitas, a hearty stir fry loaded with egg noodles, or a rich pasta dish. You can whip up tasty tacos with your favourite taco toppings on warm corn tortillas, a quick lunch of cheese toasties with finely diced onions, or a spicy corn salsa with a squeeze of lime juice to eat with tortilla chips. Being able to easily chop veg can upgrade any meal – you no longer have to think “I’m not sure I can be bothered” – it takes seconds.
And it isn’t just for a dinner treat! Think about an easy breakfast of scrambled eggs loaded with diced peppers, or prepping fruit for banana bread pancakes drizzled with maple syrup. It even makes prepping an easy camping dessert a breeze – imagine slicing fresh strawberries to go with whipped cream, or chopping nuts and milk chocolate to stuff into campfire banana boats (wrapped up in tin foil packets and cooked directly in the embers for a gooey sweet treat melted with brown sugar).
Basically, if you can prep quickly, it opens up a whole new world of camping food ideas and best camping recipes.
Simple Recipe: Tomato & Onion Camping Curry Base
This is my absolute favourite proof of concept, and one of the best easy camping meals we make. It tastes incredibly fresh, takes about 15 minutes in a frying pan, cast iron skillet, or dutch oven on your camping stove, and makes a perfect meal for the whole family.
You need:
- 2 large onions and 4 fresh tomatoes
- A splash of olive oil
- Your pre-mixed spice tub (see below)
- 1 tin of coconut milk
- Optional: A tin of chickpeas, or serve with a leafy greens side dish.
Spice tub mix (Prep at home!):
- 1 tsp curry powder, 1 tsp coriander, 1 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp garlic powder, salt, and chilli flakes.
Method:
- Slam the onions and tomatoes through the vegetable chopper.
- Fry the diced onions in oil until soft, then stir in the tomatoes and your spice tub.
- Pour in the coconut milk and simmer until it creates a thick, rich sauce.
Camping tip: Prep that spice tub at home and label it. Perfect make ahead food prep like this means you won’t be rummaging for five different glass jars in the dark! If you prep your spices and perhaps boil some hard boiled eggs for a packed lunch before you leave, your campsite cooking will be entirely stress-free.
What Users Say
Looking at the reviews online, most people absolutely love the sheer speed, noting that the catch-container keeps their work surface incredibly tidy. It’s widely praised as a fantastic way to make an easy family meal.
However, it isn’t perfect. The most common complaints are that it can be fiddly to clean because of the small crevices, and the blades are so sharp they require real care. When camping I would recommend giving it a quick rinse as soon as you can after use, and then do a more thorough clean at home, ideally in a dishwasher.
Who Should Buy It (And Who Shouldn’t)
You should absolutely buy this if you want fresher, delicious camping meals without loads of effort. If you hate campsite prep mess, this one skillet prep tool is a game-changer.
You should skip it if you pack ultra-light, or if you know you are the sort of camper who leaves the washing up until the next morning. Dried barbecue sauce or tomato juice ruins this tool, so if you prefer the simplicity of one good knife and a board, save your money.
The Final Verdict
If you only camp once or twice a year, you do not need loads of fancy kit. You just need a few things that remove the friction from the experience.
The 12-in-1 Vegetable Chopper does exactly that. It makes prep faster, keeps the table tidier, and helps you cook a great camping meal without turning dinner into a chore. If you love the “everyone gathers round” part of camping, this is a simple upgrade that makes it much easier to get there.
