Specifications
Let’s get into what the Mondo Sleeping Bag promises to do. It’s made from high-quality polyester fabric which is designed to be lightweight and warm, but it’s important for us to note at this stage that this is not a lightweight sleeping bag. Weighing 2.7kg, it’s certainly on the heavier side of sleeping bags, fine for car camping, but you wouldn’t want to be lugging this from location to location on a backpacking trip. To be fair, though, that isn’t what this sleeping bag is designed for.
It’s designed to fit one person comfortably in a mummy shape, which helps in retaining warmth. The bag’s temperature rating is where it really excels, as it is supposed to provide comfort down to 0°C, with its limits even stretching to between -5°C and even -22°C for more extreme conditions. (Quick bit of advice here – don’t go camping if it is -22°C outside!) This is a three-season bag, officially, and I would have thought that it is best used in Spring and Summer. Or ‘Camping Season’, as we like to call it.
The vibrant blue colour is visually appealing, and it does come in dark blue and red, if those colours appeal to you more. With dimensions that easily accommodate up to six feet in height, which suits me absolutely fine, but may make it quite uncomfortable for those over 6ft (I have read a review from someone who is 6ft 2, and they said that it was fine). The zipper is located on the left hand side of the bag, and there is a hood cord adjuster to tighten it at the opening. Comes with a carry bag.
Using the Product
I decided to take the Mondo Adult POD sleeping bag with me on a recent family camping trip, to put it through its paces. My initial thought, when I was packing the car, was that this was bigger and bulkier than most other sleeping bags, but [spoiler alert] that was pretty much my only negative impression of this sleeping bag. And, to be honest, we were only going away for a weekend, so our car wasn’t full to the brim, so the extra bulk wasn’t an issue at all.
Getting the bag to the tent wasn’t an issue either, as we were able to park close to the pitch. Also, I tend to use our Portal Camping Trolley to get all of our gear to our tent, which always makes life easier.
That night, though, the Mondo POD came into its own. It was so lovely and warm – I got an incredible night’s sleep. Its oval shape allowed me to stretch out comfortably, which made a huge difference – sometimes I can find a traditional sleeping bag a bit restrictive – I’m the kind of guy that moves around quite a lot in my sleep, so having that extra freedom meant that I didn’t keep waking myself up. The temperature outside was a bit chilly for a late summer’s night, but I slept soundly throughout.
The hood chord adjuster meant that I was able to get nice and cosy in it, with no drafts coming through. My wife was keen to try it, so on our second night I let her have a go. As a result, I think I am buying a second one…! We both got plenty of rest on our weekend away – and that’s what going away is all about, right? Sleep is so important, it’s important to have decent equipment. The Mondo POD definitely ticks that box.
Verdict
The Berghaus Mondo POD is an excellent sleeping bag. Spacious and warm, it will keep you nice and cosy in pretty much any conditions that you’re likely to camp in. The extra space, compared to other sleeping bags, means that you can move around in your sleep without restriction – and without waking yourself up!
It is bigger and bulkier than other sleeping bags as a result of this extra room, so it won’t be appropriate for every camping trip – if you’re backpacking, or really restricted on room, you’ll be better off with a small (less comfy) sleeping bag. But for the majority of camping trips, where you can park quite close to your pitch, then the better sleep that the Mondo POD sleeping bag will give is absolutely worth the little bit of extra room that it takes up
One other minor drawback – the zip tends to catch on the surrounding material, which can be annoying. It doesn’t take long to master the knack to work around this, but it’s worth highlighting.
All in all, for those who value warmth and space over portability, this sleeping bag offers good value, especially for users who plan to use it in more stationary settings or for short trips, and it also comes in handy as an extra blanket to have around the house. If you are after a sleeping bag that is comfortable and warm, you can’t go wrong with the Berghaus Mondo POD.
