Specifications
Okay, now let’s get into some specifics.
The Eurohike Genus is a tent designed for up to 8 people, making it perfect for family camping trips. To be honest, as a family of four, I have often found that ‘family tents’ don’t actually provide us with the space that we end up needing – so finding this affordable tent designed for 8 people appealed greatly!
The main feature is that it has inflatable beams which are there to make for easy pitching. You want to spend less time setting up and more time relaxing/having fun. So with an air tent, you use the pump provided to inflate the beams, and that’s pretty much it. Put in the pegs, and you’re good to go. The Eurohike Genus 800 Air Tent is a great example of how affordable this type of tent is becoming – which is great for us consumers!
Now let’s talk space – the total cm dimensions are 595L x 250W x 190H, providing ample space for a family of four or five. That breaks down into cm bedroom dimensions 225L x 240W – and you get two of these, the bedrooms sit at either end of the tent – and cm living area dimensions of 145L x 250W. This is modest compared to some other family tents, but when you factor in the large bedrooms, it all adds up to a very roomy tent. You’ll have plenty of room for a double air bed in each one, plus ample storage space. That frees up room in the living area.
The cm packed dimensions are 73 x 38 x 36, and it weighs 12.8kg. This means it won’t be suitable for carrying long distances (if you have to park your car a long way from your pitch consider a Portal Camping Trolley), and it’s not one for hiking holidays!
Its waterproof rating is 3000 mm HH, which means it should keep you dry even during heavy rain. It’s a 4-season tent, built to withstand different weather conditions, but I don’t think I’m brave enough to try it out in the British winter!
One neat feature is the large windows for ventilation. These are in the living area, designed to give you a nice air flow through the tent.
Its rectangular shape includes features like being rainproof and windproof, enhancing our camping experience. The tent also comes with a pump, simplifying the setup process. This makes it suitable for festivals, travelling, and hiking adventures.
Using the Product
On our recent camping trip with the family (2 adults, 2 under 7s), the Eurohike Genus 800 Air Tent proved to be a game-changer – and I don’t say that lightly. We’ve been lucky to try out some excellent family tents, and this is right up there as one of the best.
I was slightly anxious about setting up, as I’m more accustomed to the old-fashioned ‘poles and pegs’ traditional tent set up, but it was an absolute breeze. Or at least, it was once I got to grips with the pump, which I do confess took a little longer than I was expecting. It’s one of those things that there’s a knack to – frustrating to find, but once you do there’s no stopping you! I’m proud to say that I avoided swearing in front of the whole family during that initial struggle…
Once up and running, we had the tent ready in minutes by simply inflating the three sturdy beams. This saved us time and effort, allowing us to get straight into enjoying our time outdoors. By which I mean getting some food and drink inside us.
The tent offered plenty of space, with separate bedrooms that gave everyone a bit of privacy – two kids at one end, with all their stuff in a huge pile, and my wife and I at the other with some kind of order! The central living area was spacious enough for all our gear and a few chairs – we set up a good sized camp table and chairs outside, but there was enough space to bring them into that area when we had a spell of rain.
I guess you could point to the lack of a porch area as a drawback, which would be fair enough. But I think for the price of this tent, you could justify buying an additional porch to pop up if you really felt you needed one.
The two large windows were great, not just for some natural light during the day (to be honest we were outside for most of the day), but more for ventilation. We were lucky to have decent weather, but it never felt too hot and stuffy in there.
When the rain came, we were well protected. This was a summer shower, so I can’t vouch for it in proper rain, but at no point did I start scrambling around thinking we were about to come unstuck. It felt safe and secure. It’s a very well-built tent.
Overall, the Eurohike Genus 800 is an exceptionally well appointed tent – it’s got plenty of space and it’s very straightforward to set up. It’s very reasonably priced and it enabled us to have a very pleasant weekend away.
Verdict
Our experience with the Genus 800 was very positive. The tent’s spaciousness and separate bedrooms are perfect for modern family camping. Setting it up was easier than expected thanks to the inflatable beams, although the supplied pump took a while to get to grips with. It’s probably a good idea to have a go at inflating before you arrive on site – you don’t need the stress of a load of strangers looking at you while you’re perfecting your technique.
The main points, though, are that the tent offers tremendous value for money, providing ample space and good quality materials at a reasonable price. It’s the sort of tent that just makes family camping stress-free and more enjoyable.
Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend putting this tent on your shortlist if you’re after a new family tent. If you’re looking for a first foray into air tents – the Eurohike Genus 800 Air Tent could be the perfect fit for you.
