About The Brand
I’ll be honest with you here, Night Cat were not a brand that I knew much about before trying out this tent. They are based in Hong Kong and were set up in 2014, and they have a small range of tents and camping equipment – mainly catering to small groups of one or two campers. I would say that their range is aimed more at hikers than families. The sort of place where you can pick up a lightweight tent, a trekking pole and a backpack, the kinds of things that are frequently bought together. They have a very nice tarp hammock that I would like to try one day!
It’s nice to see a company target a niche like this, even if we tend to be involved in more family-orientated camping. And, while it’s always slightly concerning when our reviews cover a company with very little detail and that we hadn’t heard of before, the positive customer reviews are very encouraging. Also, their products seem very reasonably priced – so are they excellent value, or cheap and nasty…?
Night Cat Camping Tent Specifications
This Night Cat tent is made from durable 210D oxford cloth with fully taped seams, which have been treated with waterproof spray rating up to 3000 mm, which is there to keep your tent nice and dry in the (inevitable) event of rain. The one-layer and one-door design reduces the total weight of the tent, and the inner mesh door provides good ventilation while keeping insects outside. The outer waterproof door keeps your shoes or pets dry in the porch. The rain fly is really good quality, I have to say.
The Night Cat Tent is easy to carry and set up, thanks to its package size of 44 x 13.8 x 11.6cm and weight of 2.4kg. These dimensions make it an ideal backpacking tent.
In addition, the inner mesh door provides good ventilation and keeps insects outside.
When it comes to the inside of the Night Cat camping tent, we were impressed with its spacious interior. The tent is designed for 1-2 persons, but it felt like we had plenty of room to move around and store our gear compared to other backpacking tents. The tent’s dimensions are 220 x 140 x 120 cm, and it has a peak height of 120 cm, which gives us enough headroom to sit up comfortably. The design is a dome tent, which maximises the interior space and gives a feeling of openness. Don’t get me wrong, you are still well aware that you are in a backpacking tent, but for the size and weight, it does feel quite roomy.
Using the Product
When we took this Night Cat ultralight tent out for a trial, we inadvertently gave it a thorough test – and by that I mean, if we’d have known it was going to rain so much, we may have picked a different weekend to go!
But before we get onto that, let’s focus on the specific backpacking tent attributes that it possesses, as this will be the key selling points. So yes, it is incredibly lightweight – we walked for hours between leaving our car and setting up camp, and I have to say that I never once cursed the fact that I was carrying a tent! At 2.4kg, it’s basically like carrying around a laptop, so it wasn’t too much trouble at all. Really light for a backpacking tent in this price range.
Where it really excelled though was the setup – I think it took around 3 minutes in total. Just lay flat on the ground, insert poles and put in the pegs. Couldn’t be more straightforward, even in that weather.
So let’s talk about that, because it rained for pretty much the entire weekend – and we’re talking really heavy rain.. And yet, the tent withstood it all – it must have one of the best rain flys around, and all of our gear stayed nice and dry – as did we!
Other than that, the torch hook inside the tent is a nice touch, making it easy to find our gear in the dark. The brightly coloured guy ropes also help in this regard, thinking about it.
One thing that I found wasn’t particularly good – the pegs that are provided with the tent are not great. We always tend to take some extra with us, and to be honest, most pegs that come with the tents are not as good as the ones you can buy separately, so if you take your camping seriously, it’s always a good idea to buy some really good pegs.
Anyway, that was the only grumble I can come up with, which is a pretty minor one really.
Verdict
Based on our experience with the Night Cat Tent for 1-2 people, we can confidently say that it is a great option for those looking for a lightweight and easy-to-assemble tent for backpacking and camping trips. The tent is spacious enough for one person with gear or two people who don’t mind getting cosy.
One of the best features of this tent is how quick and easy it is to set up, taking only a few minutes to assemble. The tent is also waterproof and held up well during a rainy night, keeping us dry and comfortable. I will say that we didn’t have much wind, so I’d like to see how it performs in windy conditions as well.
I would say that one of the best things about this tent is its incredible value. You can probably get a better performing all-singing all-dancing hiking tent, but you will really struggle to beat the Night Cat at this kind of price.
